Nairobi National Park
Nairobi National Park, Kenya
Nairobi National Park
Area Overview
img
Welcome to Nairobi National Park, an island of incredible flora and fauna surrounded by a sea of humanity. Nowhere in the world is there a National Park of this magnitude, home to some of the most endangered species on the planet, next to a capital city. Where on earth can you land on an international flight and be amongst four of the big five in less than half an hour of clearing customs.
Nairobi is the gateway to the safari world, and what better place to arrive than in this incredible city and enjoy a wilderness that has been set aside. This is Kenya's first national park, and one of the first protected areas set aside for wildlife in the world.
img
The park is teaming with game and incredible birds, having boasted one of the highest world bird counts of a capital city in one day. There are over 400 species of birds in the park along with 80 species of mammal, over 40 different reptiles and amphibians and well over 500 tree and plant species. It is an extraordinary space!
The park is not only famous for its age, but also, and most importantly the hugely successful Black Rhino population with well over 80 Black Rhino and more than 10 White Rhino. The park is just under 120 Square Kilometres which makes it one of the largest Black Rhino populations in the world per square kilometre. The park Rhinos have been relocated to different areas in the country and the Black Rhino program is one of the most successful in Africa.
From other members of the Big 5, the park has over 30 adult resident Lions that roam the plains, and 10 resident Leopard which are being seen more frequently. Recently a female Cheetah with her three cubs have moved into the park and are seen on regular occasions in The Emakoko area.

Any visitors to Kenya and in fact East Africa MUST visit Nairobi National Park to not only support the incredible conservation work in the park, but also to enjoy the amazing views!

The Emakoko
Nairobi National Park, Kenya
The Emakoko
Property Overview
The Emakoko allows people to start and finish their safari in the wildlife environment they have traveled so far to enjoy. Within 15 minutes of clearing customs you can be viewing game in Nairobi National Park. The only “transfer” delays likely to be encountered en route to or from The Emakoko are the natural pauses to watch a pride of lions or waiting for a rhino or journey of giraffe to cross the road.
The Emakoko is a boutique lodge uniquely positioned on the edge of the Nairobi National Park. It is located a short 45 minute drive from either of Nairobi’s airports. The drive through the park itself, with its beautiful scenery and abundance of plains game is a superb way to start any East African safari. What better way to start a holiday by supporting the conservation of this unique area and in particular, by supporting the endangered black rhino which are prolific in this park.

By staying at The Emakoko you are directly contributing to the protection and conservation of Nairobi National Park and its wildlife.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
Activity overview
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County of northern Kenya is home to the first community owned elephant orphanage in Africa.

Designed to rescue and release orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, whilst creating much needed benefits to the local people that live alongside them, the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the representation of the communities standing up united for wildlife in recognition of the value that they can cultivate.
img
img
The orphaned elephants that are cared for by the Samburu community are symbols of a new wave of thinking about wildlife and the environment that goes far beyond traditional conservation methods and dives deeper into the core value of what nature represents.
Slide 1 of 4

The nomadic pastoralists have occupied this land for over two centuries. In an unprecedented move for wildlife conservation on community owned land, the communities have come together, united for wildlife.

Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy
Area Overview
In the northern frontier of Kenya lies the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range. The savannah plains of the conservancy are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers. This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famous “singing wells,” are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife.
Slide 1 of 3
img
The conservancy is itself community-owned and is one of the best examples of indigenous communities building sustainability for people and wildlife through truly unique and experiential safari experiences. Camel supported safaris are very popular as are walking safaris and visits to the amazing community run Reteti elephant sanctuary. To the eastern side of the conservancy is the new Sera conservancy and rhino project and really one of the last frontiers of conservation before heading towards Lake Turkana and the northern frontier.

Sarara Camp
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Sarara Camp
Property Overview
In the northern frontier of Kenya, lies the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range. The savannah plains and lush mountain slopes are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers. This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famous ‘singing wells’ are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife.
Slide 1 of 4
img
Sarara is a conservation brand that partners with indigenous communities to build sustainability for people and wildlife through truly unique and experiential safari experiences. Part of the community-owned Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in the heart of the Mathews Range, and in partnership with the Northern Rangelands Trust, Sarara has fast become a flagship model for community conservation across Africa.
Experience & Activities
Activities include day and night games drives, horseback riding, walks and bikes, optional fly camping, a seasonal water slide, village visits, the giraffe viewing platform, and of course the wonderful Reteti elephant orphanage.
Slide 1 of 9
img
One of the most authentic cultural experiences to be had in the country is to visit the "Sarara singing wells." Especially in the dry season, the local Samburu herders visit "wells" that they have dug in the dry river bed, sometimes five men deep and each belonging to a specific family. They then sing to their livestock who recognize the song and know where and in what order to come to drink. In keeping with the whole community and conservation ethos of Sarara, these same wells are then utilised at night by local wildlife, including elephants and leopards.
Accommodations
Tent
Sarara has six luxury tents, each positioned to maximise the stunning views of the Mathews Range and the watering hole. Each tent is spacious with high ceilings, plenty of cupboard space, electric lighting and 24 hour hot and cold running water. There is an outdoor bathroom with views of the hills from the shower, and also an indoor toilet and sink at the back of the tent. Each tent has its own private terrace to enjoy your morning coffee and tea whilst gazing out over the mountains.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Area Overview
In 1983, a dedicated group of conservationists embarked on a mission to save the black rhino from extinction. What began as a modest effort on 5,000 acres of privately owned land evolved into the expansive Lewa Wildlife Conservancy over the course of 30+ years, encompassing 48,000 acres of private land and the 14,000-acre Ngare Ndare National Forest Reserve. Today, this sanctuary is home to 14% of Kenya’s black rhino population, not to mention other unique and rare plant, amphibian and other mammal species
Slide 1 of 4
img
Income from tourism is vital to the sustainability of the Conservancy, which was a pioneer of the Community Conservation approach. Lewa envisages a future where the people of Kenya value, protect and benefit from wildlife and to this end supports over 10,000 children in local schools, supports women's microcredit schemes and health clinics across the area.

Maasai Mara
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Maasai Mara
Area Overview
The Mara (as it is affectionately known) covers 1510 km2 (583 mi2) and is widely considered to be Africa’s greatest reserve. The backdrop of the Siria escarpment in the west overlooks sweeping savannas, riverine woodlands, and forests on a deceptively flat landscape that extends eastwards towards the Sekenani Hills and northwards towards the Aitong Hills. The Mara is in essence the northern extension of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem and plays host to one of nature's greatest phenomenons, the Great Wildebeest Migration.
Slide 1 of 7
img
Because of the quality of wildlife viewing, the Mara has for generations been the setting for hundreds of wildlife documentaries, including Disney's African Cats, and the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Planet Earth. It is a wildlife photographer's paradise and every year visitors come to capture the spectacular wildlife. The reserve and its conservancies contain some of the highest densities of predators in Africa and this only increases as nomads and vagrants follow the huge herds back and forth through this ecosystem during the seasonal wildebeest migration.

Richard's River Camp
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Richard's River Camp
Property Overview
Perfectly situated on the banks of the Njageteck River in the private Mara North Conservancy, Richard's River Camp allows for total privacy and exclusivity. The Ngoyanai springs provide permanent water, drawing in large numbers of animals to the area around camp. This camp is also particularly known for its resident lion pride which can often been seen hunting right in front of the camp, and most always can be heard roaring during the night.
Slide 1 of 5
img
With only seven tents, this camp is ideal for individuals as well as exclusive groups who wish to experience the Masai Mara in a personal intimate setting. Beautifully appointed with furnishings and fabrics - the result is a casually luxurious tented camp, combining exceptional wildlife with a contemporary ‘Out of Africa’ experience.
Experience & Activities
Richard’s River Camp offers day and night game drives, birding and scenic bush walks, sundowners, bush meals and cultural visits to a local Maasai Village nearby. At an additional cost are hot air balloon flights, though these must be booked in advance.
Slide 1 of 7
img
Conservation
For the last three generations, the Roberts families, who own Richard's River Camp, have played an integral part for conservation in Kenya. In 2011 Richard and Liz founded the Mara Elephant Project, which is instrumental in human-wildlife conflict mitigation and anti-poaching through the collaring, monitoring and tracking of elephants. With a dedicated team, MEP is achieving great results in reducing elephant poaching.
Accommodations
Luxury Tent
Each canvas tent is a customized design which allows for significant size, air flow, and light. The tents consist of a large bedroom area, behind which there is a dressing room followed by the bathroom. Each tent can sleep up to four people and is en-suite with a flush loo and shower with hot and cold running water.

Northern Serengeti
Northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Northern Serengeti
Area Overview
This photographer’s paradise is one of the best places in Africa to view the big cats as well as an amazing array of plains game. The northern Serengeti has the classic big open plains of the African savannah, sprawling views, and consistently delivers excellent wildlife sightings. It is one of the best places in East Africa for leopards, and the kopje strewn hillsides that are home to these elusive creatures are in themselves stunningly beautiful. A few days here can be very action packed and there’s even chances to see black rhinos in some areas.
img
img
The Serengeti is perhaps the most famous African wilderness area, its name synonymous with the notion of safari for nearly a hundred years. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers. The park on the northern side borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and, together with several other smaller reserves and conservation areas, forms the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.
Slide 1 of 3
img
The Great Wildebeest Migration
The months of July to October see over two million animals traverse these plains as part of the Great Wildebeest Migration in their never ending search for water and nutrient dense grasses. This is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World and what many call the “World Cup of Wildlife.” The energy of the bush is palpable as it literally hums with activity; the sheer numbers of animals boggles the mind and it is all part of being in this place during one of the most exhilarating times of the year.
If you are lucky you may witness a river crossing, when masses of wildebeest and zebra cross the nearby Mara River, taking their chances with the resident crocodiles who lie in wait. The other predators are all present as well, and days here can be very action packed.

October 2 - 5
Lamai Serengeti
Northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Lamai Serengeti
Property Overview
Lamai Serengeti stands proud above the plains, around a tumble of giant boulders. You can see from this outcrop, the Kogakuria Kopje, for miles and miles. Over a million wildebeest cross these plains on their way to dodge the jaws of death in the Mara River, just down the track. On the Lamai Wedge, bristling with mammals all year round, there’s never a dull moment. Above it all, our beautiful kopje is a sacred wildlife haven – and Lamai Serengeti's mission is to act as its faithful guardians.
Slide 1 of 5
img
Lamai Serengeti offers both communal and private tables, both in the open air and under cover. Picnics, sundowners, and bush breakfasts are offered for maximum enjoyment. An open air swimming pool offers outstanding views with its natural rock deck, and you can relax in the sunbeds around the pool. Three of the bedrooms have child-safe annexes, welcoming children age 8 and over, and children over 12 are welcome on bush walks, with the option of private guides.
img
img
Experience & Activities
Lamai Serengeti fulfils the promise of the Serengeti many times over - by car and on foot - in these remote, less-travelled short grass plains. This part of the Serengeti is bisected by the perilous Mara River, where once a year, between July and October, over a million-strong wildebeest and zebra throw themselves across its crocodile-infested waters, heading for where the grass is greener. This makes for spectacular predator and prey viewing on the banks in the late dry season.
Slide 1 of 3
img
What is less known about this part of the Serengeti ecosystem are the very healthy concentrations of lion, leopard and buffalo to be seen all year round. With expert guides and rugged 4x4s, you’ll head out into the plains for big mammal discovery, and fantastic photographic opportunities. When the grass is short and safe to move through, guides lead groups out of the lodge, where small valleys, river lines and rocky kopjes make for frequent changes of scenery...and provide perfect cover for approaching wild animals.

Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
Ngorongoro Crater
Area Overview
A veritable Garden of Eden, the Ngorongoro Crater is only 260 km2 (100mi2) in size yet has some of the highest densities of lion and spotted hyena found anywhere in the world. The view from the crater rim at 2,000 feet above the floor is nothing short of breathtaking. The thick mountain forests of the crater highlands strike a sharp contrast with the short grass plains of the crater floor with its yellow fever Acacia woodlands and streams. The soda lake Magadi in the center of the crater floor sometimes attracts lesser flamingos, and the area is known for very large tusked elephants, black rhino, and great predator action.
Slide 1 of 4
img
Easily accessible from Arusha, the three million year old Ngorongoro Crater was once a gigantic volcano that some suggest was even higher than Mt Kilimanjaro. It is the largest intact caldera in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walks are available on the rim in certain areas, but game viewing on the crater floor is strictly by vehicle and on designated game drive routes. Local Maasai pastoralists and their villages surround the western side of the crater whilst the eastern side is heavily forested up to the farming town of Karatu.
