South America, the Safari Way

The art of the safari was born in East Africa. It now flourishes in South America too, and travel designer Lindsay Berg knows exactly where to go, from the Galapagos to Patagonia and beyond.

The art of the safari was born and perfected in East Africa, where UNCHARTED co-founders Chip and Sandy Cunningham got their start.

But that style of travel — moving between exceptional Outposts set in the world's premier natural destinations — now flourishes across the rest of the UNCHARTED Global Safari portfolio. Nowhere more so than in South America.

Jaguars and Pumas are literally walking along next to you, similar to what you’d experience with lions in Africa.

The continent holds a lifetime of bucket-list destinations for nature travelers: the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon, Machu Picchu, the Pantanal, the Andes, the Atacama Desert, Iguazu Falls, Patagonia. And the ways to experience them are just as varied — world-class diving and snorkeling, birding, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, climbing, mountaineering, stargazing.

There's also a rich diversity of culture, urban and rural, woven through these nature-driven trips. Cities like Lima, Quito, Santiago, and Buenos Aires are destinations in their own right, not just convenient layovers on the way to somewhere else.

And South America has a practical advantage over our more far-flung destinations: it's simply easier to get to. A two-week safari from the US doesn't require extra travel days or a jarring adjustment in time zones.

UNCHARTED trip designer Lindsay Berg knows where to go, when to go, and which under-the-radar places belong on the itinerary — after Machu Picchu, for instance, she'll point you south to the no less staggering Colca Valley. She knows the outfitters and the Outposts: the camps, lodges, haciendas, wine estates, and boutique hotels that pair a singular sense of place with superb hospitality and naturalist guides. Like every UNCHARTED trip designer, Lindsay builds each itinerary around the people traveling it.
