Then shift ashore to a safari camp on Santa Cruz, where giant tortoises wander beneath the tents and dinner runs four courses under the stars.
A soft landing eight minutes from Quito's airport, high in the Andes. Arrive late, sleep well, and fly to the islands at first light. The capital's World Heritage old town, cobblestones, ornate churches, and volcano views from El Panecillo, all wait for the return leg.

A tented camp on the rim of an extinct volcanic cone, set on 55 private hectares where giant tortoises creep through the undergrowth beneath the tents. Days move at family pace: the tortoise reserve and its lava tunnels, Cerro Mesa's endemic forest, a bike ride down to Garrapatero Beach, a working coffee farm on the drive home. Four-course dinners on the veranda, finches at breakfast.
