The Wildest Nights on Earth

Go wild. Spend a night out in the bush or simply under the stars, where you become part of the cosmic scene, not just a spectator.

STARBEDS & SLEEP-OUTS

While Outposts around the world continue to raise the bar on luxury, many are simultaneously doubling down on something far more elemental: the night itself. Sleep-outs, whether beneath open skies or in pared-down camps deep in the bush, make you part of the scene, not just a shy spectator.

Closer to wildlife than to other people, you might feel a tinge of trepidation that gives way to a liberating sense of isolation. You gain an intimate sensory connection to both the local landscape and the greater universe revealed in the darkest skies ever.

The sleep-out may well be the most memorable night of your journey. These are some of our current favorites.

Zimbabwe: The Hwange StarBed and the Lion 30 Yards Away

Set in a private concession adjacent to Hwange National Park, the Amalinda Collection lodges offer the ultimate in exclusive access to the wildlife-packed park. The adults-only Khulu Bush Camp includes the option of a private family villa, but that rarefied sense of communing with Africa at its wildest reaches its peak in a sleepout in the Hwange StarBed.

The setup is tree-house simplicity, little more than a comfy elevated loft under open sky. UNCHARTED President Sandy Cunningham recalls her night with cinematic clarity: “Perched high overlooking a water hole, the Southern Hemisphere skies lit up our beds for the night. We fell asleep quickly only to be woken around 3:30 a.m. by distant lions, who slowly came closer and closer. I picked up my spotlight and less than 30 yards away a huge male lion glared back at me …” She raved about the experience, the kind you just don’t have indoors.

Tanzania: On Nomad's Walking Safari, Sleep Out in the Milky Way

In the vast, untamed reaches of Ruaha National Park, scale alone begins to shift your perspective. The experience offered by Nomad Tanzania goes even further by stripping the safari down to its essential elements. Fly-camping keeps you out in the bush rather than returning to a camp or lodge at day’s end. Often reached on foot during a walking safari, these lightweight tent setups keep the focus firmly on the wilderness experience itself.

“I thought I knew what a safari was,” says UNCHARTED Creative Director Connor Miko. “But Ruaha had other plans for us — a canvas camp, two cots, and a rifle quietly resting on our guide’s lap. We slept in mesh-walled tents with the Milky Way overhead and elephants somewhere beyond the light.”

Here, the luxury isn’t what’s added, it’s what’s removed.

Australia: Luxe Desert Nights at Longitude 131°

At Longitude 131°, the sleep-out leans less rugged, more refined, and possibly more romantic. You retain all the creature comforts of this legendary lodge, coupled with the singular sensations of an Outback sleep-out in range of the magnetic, even spiritual, pull of iconic Uluru.

The experience centers on a classic Australian swag (a canvas bedroll), prepared on the deck of your private tent while you’re at dinner. Rolled out with thick mattresses and fine linens, the setup invites you into the cool desert night beneath a vast, unfiltered sky. Eco-smart fireplaces add just enough warmth without breaking the spell. Come morning, you wake face-to-face with Uluru, glowing in the first light. Pure magic.

New Zealand: The Still of the Night in the Lindis Pods

Tucked into the sweeping expanse of the South Island’s Ahuriri Valley, carved over millions of years by the fierce glacial waters, The Lindis Lodge offers a design-forward kind of sleep-out in an otherworldly landscape defined by stillness.

Set apart from the main lodge, the standalone Pods are positioned low on the valley floor, their mirrored glass walls reflecting the landscape until they nearly disappear. Inside, a king bed faces outward; outside, a deep soaking tub invites long, quiet nights beneath a sky that feels close enough to touch. The experience provides the illusion of seclusion along with total immersion — watching light move across the valley at dusk, then waking to it again at dawn.
