The Serengeti at Its Wildest

What makes the Great Migration such a singular wildlife phenomenon is that it takes place in a closed ecosystem: More than a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles circulate constantly in Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of greener pastures.

it's time for a life-changing adventure

While the herds move, most safari camps stay put. These five luxury mobile camps, however, track the Great Migration across the Serengeti to keep you in the thick of the action. From the drama of river crossings in the north to the thrill of calving season in the south, they move with the wildlife, and away from the crowds that tend to cluster near fixed-location lodges when the herds are in their vicinity.

Mobile camps evoke the mystique of expedition-style safaris of bygone eras. Exclusive game viewing is guaranteed, and the mobiles are high-quality bush camps with all the comforts of a proper safari: spacious canvas tents, real beds, en-suite bathrooms, solar power, private chefs, and firelit dinners under the stars. All with the raw Serengeti just beyond the canvas.

Serengeti Under Canvas Camp: The Great Migration, Uncompromised

At Serengeti Under Canvas, luxury follows the rhythms of the wild. Moving five times a year to exclusive private sites, this intimate mobile camp offers immersion into the Great Migration, without sacrificing indulgence.

Each of the spacious tents blends old-world romance with safari elegance, complete with complimentary Swarovski Optik binoculars. Think crystal glassware, chandeliers, brass fittings, custom Indian rugs, en suite bathrooms, and a dedicated butler attending to everything from hot showers to chilled sundowners.

From game drives to sunrise hot-air ballooning, every moment feels cinematic. Not to mention, deeply-rooted: when the camp is in Ndutu, in the southern Serengeti, explore the breathtaking surrounds of the archaeological site of Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of mankind, best known as home of the earliest remains of Homo sapiens.

Usawa Camp: Freedom to Follow the Herd

Usawa Serengeti is a mobile camp that follows the Great Migration across nine remote sites throughout the length of the Serengeti. “In the old days of guiding, you had a vehicle and a tent, and you moved wherever the wilderness went,” Keith Vincent, one of the camp’s creators, told Travel & Leisure. “With Usawa, I wanted to give that freedom back to our guests.”

But freedom doesn’t mean forgoing comfort. Usawa — Swahili for “balance” — hosts just 12 guests in six solar-powered, en-suite tents equipped with king-size beds dressed in luxury linens, Wi-Fi, hot water, charging stations, and minibars stocked with fresh coffee and snacks. The camp’s interiors spotlight Tanzanian craftsmanship: handwoven baskets, blankets, and pillows sourced from a women-led artisan collective. But perhaps its most luxurious aspect is that camp locations are situated within the Serengeti’s designated walking zones, which means guided walks begin directly from camp.

Serengeti Safari Camp: Classic, Pure, and Simple

Born from two old Land Rovers and a dream to follow the Great Migration, Serengeti Safari Camp remains one of the most authentic mobile camps in Tanzania. While the vehicles are newer, the ethos hasn’t changed: full immersion in the wilderness, no frills, nothing you don’t need, and everything that you do. The camp moves four to five times a year, always shadowing the migration to put you right in the heart of the action.

With just six Meru-style canvas tents, the experience is intimate and unfussy. Inside, you’ll find wrought-iron beds, sun-bleached linens, hand-carved wooden furniture, and a timeless, lived-in feel. Hot bucket showers, flush toilets, and thoughtful service provide just the right level of comfort, allowing the bush to take center stage. This is simple luxury for purists: a safari for those who want to truly feel the Serengeti, not just see it.

Ubuntu Migration Camp: Locations, Locations, Locations

At Ubuntu Camp, you're always in the right place at the right time. From June to mid-November, the camp — which offers exceptional walking safaris in one of the park’s most secluded regions — is set on the remote Lamai Wedge in the northern Serengeti, ideal for witnessing the Mara River crossings with fewer crowds, and a favorite for photographers. From mid-December to mid-March, Ubuntu then moves south to Kusini, perched on a hillside overlooking the wildebeest-filled plains. This prime vantage point offers sweeping views and thrilling predator action during calving season.

After a day tracking the migration, you’ll fall asleep to the soundtrack of the Serengeti: wildebeest grunting nearby, hyenas calling in the distance, and nothing but canvas between you and the wild. With just ten tents, expect pristine attention to detail: fire-heated bucket showers, solar lighting, and gumboots ready for muddy trails -– it truly is a classic, boots-on-the-ground safari.

Olakira Migration Camp: Wild Sounds Become Your Lullaby

Tucked deep within the Serengeti, Olakira Migration Camp keeps pace with Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacle. From July to October, it’s perfectly positioned in the north for the dramatic Mara River crossings, where herds of wildebeest brave crocodile-infested waters. From December to March, the camp shifts south to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where up to 8,000 wildebeest are born each day during the calving season, drawing predators and awe-inspiring action.

The magic doesn’t end when the sun sets, it just shifts skyward. Each of the camp’s nine stargazing tents is equipped with a bed on wheels that rolls into a fully enclosed, insect-proof veranda. Drift off under the stars, wrapped in crisp linens, as wildebeest graze nearby and hyenas call in the distance. It’s a stargazer’s fantasy in the dark-sky nights of the Serengeti.
