A proud Massai son of Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, Samson comes from the plains and rolling volcanic ridges that link Amboseli and Tsavo national parks to constitute one of East Africa’s most critical wilderness corridors.
Long before he addressed the United Nations or became a global voice for regenerative tourism, he knew this landscape as home. He knows its people, their cattle, the wildlife, and the delicate balance that sustained life under harsh conditions.
Samson’s journey began humbly. He started as a waiter at Campi ya Kanzi, listening, watching, learning. From there, he rose to become a highly certified guide and eventually one of the most trusted conservation leaders in southern Kenya. His ascent exemplifies the philosophy that now defines his life’s work: Conservation must grow from within the community it serves.

For more than two decades, Samson has been at the heart of the partnership between the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT) and Campi ya Kanzi, helping transform a small ranger initiative into a thriving organization that today employs more than 400 local Maasai in education, healthcare, and land stewardship. Under his leadership, wildlife protection in the Chyulu ecosystem has moved from enforcement to coexistence by reducing poaching, preventing deforestation, and restoring pride in traditional guardianship of the land.
What sets Samson apart is his ability to bridge worlds. He speaks with tribal elders and government ministers, rangers and researchers, villagers and visiting heads of state — all with equal clarity and credibility. His deep cultural grounding allows him to translate modern conservation science into something far older and more powerful: a continuation of Maasai responsibility to protect what sustains life.

That philosophy is perhaps best embodied at Campi ya Kanzi and Chyulu Lodge, where Samson has helped pioneer a model of regenerative tourism that is now studied globally. Chyulu Lodge, Africa’s first zero-emissions safari lodge, is solar-powered, carbon-negative, and community-led. It proves that sustainability is not a sacrifice, but a necessary and beneficial evolution.
Samson’s leadership has taken him far beyond the Chyulus. In 2012, he was named a United Nations Champion of the Earth, representing not only Kenya, but Indigenous conservation leaders worldwide. Yet despite international recognition, his compass remains firmly pointed home. His greatest legacy is not accolades, but the hundreds of young Maasai who now see conservation not as an outside intervention, but as a path to a dignified and viable future.
Through Samson Parashina, conservation is no longer abstract policy or a distant philanthropy, it’s a lived commitment. In the Chyulu Hills, where elephants still roam ancient migration routes and cloud forests cling to lava ridges, Samson stands as proof that the most powerful conservation warriors are those who never stopped belonging to the land they protect.
