Africa has always boasted out of this world experiences paired with remote outposts and extraordinary adventure guides—and we're bringing you the best of the new entering 2023.

Below we highlight ten top outposts, new and old, paired with a broad spectrum of experiences, from cultural art jaunts to the ultimate helicopter safari.

North Island Okavango: A New Outpost to Experience the Delta Three Ways

The outpost itself is located on a private island, surrounded by a mosaic of other islands all netted together by shining lagoons and transient channels. Between the floodplains, open savanna and woodlands, there is an abundance of wildlife everywhere.

At North Island Okavango, you get to experience the Delta three ways; on land (game drives), on water (mokoro and boat meanders) and in the air (hot air ballooning and scenic helicopter flights). This is a safari experience in the Okavango that's hard to beat.

Eden Nairobi: A Contemporary Art Insider’s Experience

Nairobi has blossomed, for what was, once a get in and get out of it as quickly as a possible city, we can't say enough about lingering longer! Two nights is a must.

If ever there is a poster child for the NEW Nairobi then it is undoubtedly Eden Nairobi, the spectacular former home of Anna and her family turned into the most utterly divine boutique hotel sitting adjacent to the Giraffe Center and Hog Ranch the late Peter Beards property.

Ol Malo: Where Giants Trod

Just back from safari in Kenya, UNCHARTED owners Chip and Sandy Cunningham had the opportunity to experience the ultimate helicopter safari to Lake Turkana. This new way of exploring Kenya is taking shape in a major way. For this incredible adventure, there is no one better than Maverick Chopper Pilot and third-generation Kenyan, Andrew Francombe, a long-time family friend.

Taking off from the Ol Malo helipad in Laikipia they were lightly loaded with the basics for a day and night away at the farthest reaches of northern Kenya. Andrew is one of those rare breeds of humans who can bring even the most rudimentary experience to life in a brilliant technicolor kind of way.

Fuzz’s Camp: Tracking Rhinos by Day, Sipping Cocktails by Night

Borana Conservancy has become one of the most important rhino sanctuaries in Kenya. Rhinos from Lewa were translocated to Borana and the fence between the two conservancies was torn down, to create a safe corridor for the rhinos to breed. One of our favorite activities here is rhino tracking, helping with conservation on Borana by joining the team of scouts who track rhinos in the morning. The team must set out every morning to see and account for each rhino on the Conservancy. Learn more about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into conservation and meet the team that keeps their rhino safe.

After a fulfilling day of conservation work, relax outside your tent and sip fireside cocktails, listening to the sounds of the savanna at night.

Sussurro: Explore the Mozambique Coast by Dhow During Golden Hour

Set alongside the secluded turquoise waters of Southern Mozambique, Sussurro is the perfect destination to connect with your natural surroundings and relax in its thoughtfully designed spaces.

A truly unique encounter at this new outpost is their sunset dhow experience—a potent encapsulation of Sussurro’s atmosphere in a single experience. Dhow sailing is one of the oldest and most traditional ways of getting around along the East African coast. Catch sail into the golden lit bay on a dow and arrive back to a lantern-lit residence as the stars come out.

Lolobezi: Take on the Mighty Zambezi by Canoe

The Lower Zambezi is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has some of the best wildlife sightings in the world. Lolobezi is set on five hectares of protected wilderness and the lodge has been designed to make the most of the one kilometer of private river frontage.

Accompanied by your expert guide, cruise down the mighty Zambezi River by boat or canoe. Take a relaxed paddle through the water and experience Africa from a different perspective, while still spotting game from the river.

L’Hôtel: The Hidden Gardens of Kech

L’Hôtel Marrakech sits conveniently located near Jemaa el-Fnaa square in the center of the red city’s Medina. The new darling of Marrakech, a historic 19th-century Riad, was bought by Jasper Conran and given lashings of his legendary design style. With five spacious suites, set around a gorgeous courtyard garden and swimming pool, this hidden gem combines scrumptious food, true Conran comfort, and impeccable service. Conran’s style combines superb Moroccan craftsmanship with antique furnishings and colorful textiles, vibrant Moroccan lighting, and art from his personal collection - it feels like your own private home a stone's throw from all the buzz in the medina, and better yet you can take over the whole place with your friends and family!

COME ON IN — When not draped across the pool chairs, do tear yourself away for an afternoon exploring the hidden gardens of Marrakech with us. With their walled gardens and winding footpaths shading combinations of palms, tree ferns, bamboo, and a myriad array of cacti, agaves, and yucca, and some dotted with azure pools and lily ponds. You will find magic everywhere within these gardens on the edge of the mighty Sahara desert.
