Rooms and tents

Where you sleep.

Each suite sits on its own palm island, looking over Lake Manyara, at least 80 metres from the next. About 100 square metres of canvas, lava stone and wood: a bedroom, a reading corner, a dressing room, and a bathroom with an indoor shower and an outdoor one, plus a terrace and a patio daybed. Yoga mats are in the room, and laundry is available. The style is contemporary vintage. Fabia renovates every year, and she keeps the rooms well clear of shabby chic.

The day

A day at Chem Chem.

  1. The paceSlow safari

Each party has its own expert guide and private vehicle, and the day is yours to set. Fabia says it is not a boarding school and it is not a boot camp. Slow safari was born here, taken from slow food: not breadth, but depth. On foot you see, feel, touch and smell the bush.

  2. MorningOut on foot

Walking safaris and tracking with a private guide. A jog with a Maasai along Lake Manyara, a flamingo stroll at the lake, a palm-forest walk out to the giraffes, and a baobab bush breakfast. A silent walk with a Maasai to the lake can end at a fire, with a written note set alight. Birding, if that is the morning you want.

  3. MiddayPool, spa and the kitchen

The pool sits in the palm oasis, and the Amani Spa treats you indoors or out. Fabia's kitchen cooks Pori, her bush cuisine, with health shots, herbal teas and a Mama Menu. Sandy counts hanging by the pool among the reasons to linger.

  4. AfternoonDrives, villages and the parks

Game drives in the concession, by day and after dark, plus track reading and bush cooking, and time in Maasai villages. A private day can run into Tarangire, Lake Manyara National Park or Ngorongoro. Tarangire and Lake Manyara are a short drive away. Fabia describes bull herds that come up to the vehicle, thirty, forty or fifty males together, and tree-climbing lions. In November, Sandy notes, Tarangire loses its cats.

  5. EveningSundowners and the fire

Sundowners on the Sangaiwe Plains, a moonlit game drive, then dinner under the stars or a private dinner for two. The main house, in the form of a landing flamingo, holds an outdoor fireplace and a fire lounge.

Our take

Why we send people here.

We have known Fabia Bausch and Nicolas Negre, who own Chem Chem, since at least 2013. In 2025 we honoured them for keeping the elephant corridor open between Tarangire and Lake Manyara, and for the villages around those parks. Travellers tell us it stood above the rest of the trip.

Day one you arrive a stranger, day two you start to know one another, day three you are friends, day four you are family, and you never want to leave. These are not hotel rooms in the bush. The magic is the people behind the scenes.

Sandy Cunningham, UNCHARTED®

A family who travelled with us in mid-2026 wrote that Chem Chem stood above the rest of a wonderful trip: truly world-class, a guide who was a fine person and a leader, and a journey that ran without a hitch.
